As a city near the water, Hamburg is revitalising its
former harbour areas. A prominent example is the new urban district
Hafen City near the inner city along the Norderelbe. Less
well-known is the development of the inland harbour and the Castle
Island of Harburg. Since the middle of the 1990’s, the inland
harbour and the Castle Island are being developed into an urban
district with mixed land uses of approximately 1.000 new dwellings
and a continuously increasing number of office buildings.
